PARTICIPATION OF THE PROTECTION DIVISION, PRIME MINISTER’S DEPARTMENT (BPJPM) DELEGATION IN THE 2026 SOUTHEAST ASIA REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON WITNESS PROTECTION

6 - 9 September 2026, Phuket – The Protection Division, Prime Minister’s Department (BPJPM) participated in the Southeast Asia Regional Workshop on Progress and Best Practices in Witness Protection 2026, held from 6 to 9 September 2026 at the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa, Phuket, Thailand.
The regional workshop served as a platform for participating countries to exchange views, experiences, expertise and best practices in the management and implementation of witness protection programmes.
Malaysia’s participation also provided BPJPM with an opportunity to share the country’s latest developments in strengthening its witness protection system, including efforts to modernise services through the digitalisation of the application process and participation status verification for the Witness Protection Programme.
Malaysia also shared recent legislative developments following the finalisation of the Witness Protection (Amendment) Bill 2026 in Parliament on 14 July 2026.
EXCHANGE OF BEST PRACTICES
Among the key areas discussed during the workshop were best practices and mechanisms in the implementation of witness protection programmes, involving representatives from Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
The discussions also focused on the potential and feasibility of cross-border witness protection, particularly in strengthening cooperation between jurisdictions in addressing witness protection matters involving more than one country.
The workshop also featured expert lectures and presentations by academic experts from Thammasat University, Thailand, as well as officers from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on standards, benchmarks and best practices in witness protection in the Asian region.
BPJPM DELEGATION
BPJPM was represented by an official delegation led by the Director of the Operations Branch, accompanied by the Assistant Director of Investigations and the Senior Assistant Director of Information Technology.
The participation of officers from the areas of operations, investigations and information technology reflects BPJPM’s comprehensive approach towards strengthening the implementation of the Witness Protection Programme in line with current developments and the increasingly complex requirements of witness protection management.
Malaysia’s participation in the regional workshop also provided an avenue to further strengthen cooperation and knowledge-sharing with participating countries towards enhancing witness protection practices at the regional level.
